AI in Education: How the EU's New AI Act Will Transform Schools

How AI is Transforming Education

(The Future of Learning: Personalized, Inclusive, and AI-Driven—But at What Cost?)

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is going to revolutionize education as we know it—providing a greater degree of personalization, inclusivity, and student-centeredness. But with great power comes great responsibility. The new AI Act from the EU, which is the first of its kind in the world, promises to impact schools, teachers, and students. Below is what you need to know.

The AI Education Revolution

The AI Education Revolution: What is Possible?

Envision a classroom where:

✅ There is a personalized learning plan for each student that leverages their strengths and weaknesses.
✅ Teachers have AI-powered assistants that complete grading and feedback in real time along with lesson planning.
✅ Every student with a disability has seamless, adaptive, and live AI tools to help them.

This is not fictional, it is the near future. But before we get to the normalisation of AI in schools, there are some serious considerations to tackle.

EU AI Act

The EU AI Act: Changing the Game for Education

The EU is definitely in the process of regulating AI. Through the EU AI Act, it has determined that most AI systems related to education will be classified as "high-risk." So why is it considered high-risk?

🔴 AI bias may exacerbate inequality (e.g., some grading algorithms are likely favouring specific demographic groups).
🔴 Data privacy is critical—student data must not fall into the wrong hands.

🔴 Transparency is a must—schools must know how the AI system makes a decision.

Important timelines to be aware of are:

February 2025: Any AI system with "unacceptable risk" will be prohibited.

August 2026: All AI systems related to education must comply with the EU AI Act.

What Schools Must Do NOW

1️⃣ Ensure Compliance

  • Audit what AI tools are being used in schools.
  • Train educators on ethical AI use and data security.

2️⃣ Pilot Programs

  • Pilot AI in true context (e.g. automated grading systems).
  • Build a secure cloud to protect student information.

3️⃣ Partner Globally

  • Best practices should be shared between schools and countries.
  • No AI tool will do it all—networking must be the priority.

4️⃣ Create an AI Roadmap

  • This must be governmental and school led.
  • AI should facilitate equity and not create more.

The Future of Education Powered by AI, Guided by Values

Key Takeaway

AI has the potential to improve education and promote equity—but it depends on us acting now. The EU AI Act is a wake-up call: schools must be alert to the possibilities of AI, or risk falling behind.
