Digital Marketing: What is SEO? (Search Engine Optimization)
A Basic
Definition:
SEO is making your website better so that it shows up more often and at the top (for free) in the search results (like on Google).
Explanation with a compare:
Think of the internet as a huge library and Google as the librarian. With SEO, you are organizing your book (your website) by strategically providing your book with a relevant and recognizable title and breaking it up into relevant and useful chapters and getting well recognized books in the library to reference your book (links). Now, when someone asks said librarian if he has a book about your subject, he can confidently direct them to your book first.
A Grounded Example 1:
A downtown Chicago coffee shop wants to gain an edge in attracting customers. They write a long blog post with awesome pictures titled, "The 5 Best Things About Our Single-Origin Coffee." They feature reviews from customers and even include a map where they are located. Because the page is really good and answers what coffee lovers may search for, Google starts to show it to people in Chicago who search for "best coffee near me." That's SEO!
Concrete Example 2 (E-commerce):
A handmade
leather journal e-commerce store located in Austin, Texas, has sent out a blog
post called "How to Choose the Right Leather Journal," to its
customers all over the country. The blog post covers things like quality of the
paper, types of leather, and traditional uses of journals. They included
questions that everybody is searching for, such as "what is the best
journal for writers?" and "what is a durable leather notebook?".
A few
months later, Google decided that they wrote a helpful article. The article
started to appear on the first page of Google when someone in New York or
California types in one of those terms. Now they are getting free, targeted
traffic from across the country and, subsequently, more order flow.
