Baltimore Bridge Collapse Search Becomes Recovery Mission, Six Presumed Dead


Baltimore, MD (March 26, 2024) – A devastating tragedy unfolded in Baltimore early Tuesday morning when a major bridge collapse claimed the lives of at least six people. The Francis Scott Key Bridge disintegrated after being struck by a container ship, sending workers on the bridge and plunging them into the water below.


"The collapse happened around 1:30 am," said Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath. "Sadly, by Tuesday evening, the search and rescue efforts transitioned into a recovery mission. Given the time elapsed and the water temperature, we hold little hope of finding survivors."

Maryland Governor Wes Moore expressed his profound sorrow for the families impacted by this disaster. "This is a heartbreaking day for Baltimore," he stated. "Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. We understand the excruciating wait they endured for news, and we share their grief."



The cause of the ship's loss of control and the full extent of the damage to the bridge are still under investigation. The focus for authorities has shifted to recovering the remains of the missing and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area.
